First Generation Mini R50/R53

Although the original classic Mini remained in production overseas up until model year 2000, the Mini brand was taken over by BMW and subsequently brought to the US market as well. Their first offerings in the US were the R50 and R53 for model year 2001. The R50 was the base model with naturally aspirated 1.6 Liter engine, and the R53 was the supercharged version. The Tritec engine used in both Mini models was more commonly used in Chrysler and Dodge vehicles starting in 1999.

Second Generation Mini R56

The second generation of Mini Cooper was introduced in 2007. Both base models and Cooper S models carried the same R56 designation, and were now powered by the Prince Engine, which was a joint effort between BMW, Citroen, and Puegeot. The Prince Engine was manufactured in the UK, and Mini was proud to return to the brand's UK heritage. The 1.6 Liter engines gained much of BMW's technology, and were offered as a turbocharged and direct-injected version in the Cooper S.

The R56 designs were the basis of the newly introduced models between 2008-2013 including the Clubman, Countryman, Coupe, Roadster, and Paceman.

Third Generation Mini F56

Introduced in 2014, and still the current platform. The F56 Mini Cooper was the first "all BMW" Mini to be offered. Using the B38 and B48 engines which are shared with some BMW models, the base Cooper got a turbocharger for the first time. With its modular engine design, the B38 and B48 engines are virtually identical, the only difference being that the B38 is a 3 cylinder engine, and the B48 is a four banger. After the introduction of the F56 Mini, the Clubman and Countryman models would eventually follow suit with redesigns of their own, however the coupe, roadster, and Paceman would be discontinued.
